Norwegian Elkhounds - History

Norwegian Elkhounds are one of the most ancient breeds. Their history dates back to as far as 4000-5000 BC. The skeletons of these dogs, which were found in Scandinavia prove the old age of the breed.

From early time the Norwegian Elkhound has always been a devoted human companion. Yet, the breed was used mainly in hunting since the Norwegian Elkhound had a perfect sense of smell and appropriate physical qualities for hunting. The breed's weather resistant coat allowed it to be used in cold climates. So, the Norwegian Elkhounds' hardiness and strength provided people with an energetic companion and hard-working dog.

The name of the breed is a reminder of the dog's activities. The Norwegian Elkhound was used in hunting the moose, which is "Elg" in Norwegian. The "hund" translates as "dog." Hence, the name of the breed. Norwegian Elkhounds made wonderful hunters of the lynx, mountain lion, rabbit, deer, and other animals. The breed is also known for its ability to hunt better at night. Hence, it was frequently used in hunting the badger.

Norwegian Elkhounds - Recognition

The show carrier of Norwegian Elkhounds began in 1877. The dogs took part in shows organized by the Norwegian Hunters Association. The British Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1923. The Elkhound Association of America initiated the promotion of the Norwegian Elkhound and it was acknowledged as the official breed organization in the ward of the AKC. Hence, Norwegian Elkhounds received official recognition in the United States in 1930.
