Norwegian Elkhounds are medium-sized dogs used in a variety of activities. They make wonderful hunting dogs, watchdogs, and companions. The Norwegian Elkhound is good in tracking, agility, and sledding. Like all northern breeds, the Norwegian Elkhound is a hardy dog. It has a square body build and Spitz-like appearance.
The coat is double and weather resistant. Norwegian Elkhounds come in gray color with the undercoat being lighter. There is also a black variety of the
breed; however, gray Elkhounds are more common. In contrast to the rest of the body, they have a black muzzle, ears, and
tail tip.
The skull is broad with a prominent stop. The breed has strong jaws. The Elkhound has dark eyes with a friendly expression. The tail is carried over the back.
Height: Males are about 19-21 inches. Females are usually one inch smaller.
Weight: Norwegian Elkhounds weigh from 40 to 60 pounds.

Norwegian Elkhounds - Personality
The Norwegian Elkhound is a friendly dog. It is very alert and is suited for families with children. The breed has a tendency to be reserved with strangers. It does not do well with same sex dogs. Therefore, it is not recommended to have a few same sex Norwegian Elkhounds in the household.
The breed has a good sense of smell. These dogs tend to be carried away by a strange smell and roam much. Training is highly recommended for the Norwegian Elkhound. It should be noted that the breed is independent and does not obey to harsh training techniques.
Although Norwegian Elkhounds can be slightly difficult to train, they should receive consistent training from an early age.
